The Power of a Boycott

The term “boycott” derived from an historical event that took place in County Mayo, Ireland in 1880. It was there that a protest sprung up to oppose certain policies being implemented by Charles Boycott, an estate agent for an English farm landlord in the region. Those policies included; too high rents for tenant farmers, as well as their evictions when they couldn’t pay.

It was during the Irish land agitation of 1880 that the leader Charles Parnell suggested combatting these policies and other injustices by essentially putting the landlord out of business. By refusing to farm his land, work in his house and cutting off trade to his farm it would effectively shut down his farm.

The term “boycott” was born in this way and continues to refer to an act of protest and an instrument of financial war against someone or something that you don’t agree with either religiously, politically or economically. I am calling 2023 “the summer of the woke boycott,” because it seems like in the United States a boycott of woke corporations has begun. It all started with the spontaneous boycott of Anheuser-Busch for its’ support of trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney. But, unlike the land agitation of 1880, there was no politician recommending this action. It just rose up spontaneously.

It seemed to emerge among people who were sick and tired of having values shoved down their throats that they do no believe in. Musicians took to the stage and poured out cans of the usual summertime favorite beverage. Then, average folks were passing up Budweiser light beers at their liquor stores. Very quickly the market cap of the company was plunging-score!

Next, there was Nike (BeTrue), Target, North Face and Kohl’s pushing products promoting the gay lifestyle onto baby and children’s clothing lines. It is clear the woke corporate executives are not backing down from their aberrant and anti-Christian agenda no matter how much money they lose. This is a war and they know it. The corporation of today has become a hub of political activism. Let me repeat that: the corporate executive of today is motivated by bringing their spiritual and political beliefs to life, and that belief system is a hateful rebellion against all things good and godly.

These companies and their executives hire people like Erik Carnell, an English designer. He is behind the recent Pride campaign at Target department store. He makes no secret of his anti-God approach. He has created books with titles such as “Bye, Bye Binary.” He was also involved in making tuck friendly women’s bathing suits sold at Target. Tuck friendly bathing suits are women’s bathing suits designed for men who wish to hide their male genitalia. By the way, this is not even healthy. Didn’t I even see a logo on one of Erik’s products which read, Satan Respects Pronouns?

It is like one day people just got sick of all this insanity. I was just planning to drive down to Kohl’s Department store the other day to pick up a new slow-cooker, summer flip-flops and some slippers when the headlines broke about the type of deranged merch they were promoting. As I watched TicTok videos of children’s clothing racks stuffed with tee shirts saying things like: “Belong, Believe Be Proud” (with a gay rainbow and a Mickey Mouse head in the background), and a baby Sonoma brand onesie with a group of children holding the gay flag like it was their nation state, I just knew that I could not shop there anymore.

Folks, Kohl’s is all in, Disney is all in too. If we don’t have the gumption to stay away from stores and amusement parks that support this anti-God agenda then we are supporting it with our cash dollars and giving it our tacit approval. What about some of my readers around the world, are you seeing the rush to this new queer world order yet? Not for nothing, but I believe that Satan does respect pronouns and those who respect pronouns are following Satan’s evil agenda. God created us male and female, Satan is messing with God’s design.

“I will be like the most high.”Isaiah 14:14b.

It has usually been said that Christians have not been good at political and economic boycotts. Instead, people of faith have preferred to work hard, go to church and raise their children with godly values. That has not been working for us for a long time because, as we were doing that the educational system has slowly and systemically deconstructed the Judeo-Christian world view and robbed our children of their faith.

Hollywood and the entertainment community has also drawn our children into their values with catchy tunes and slick visuals which contradict every area of our Faith. Now, the gloves are completely off and we see corporations brazenly telling their customers to support the transgender movement. Now in a reversal of things corporations no longer cater to the values of their clientele, but we are expected to cater to theirs for the privilege of their services. Only we are the ones paying them for their services, how does that even make sense? We are supposed to pay for our values to be assaulted and smile?

Target executives even told their employees that those who oppose the LGBTQ agenda are extremists and violent. Nothing could be farther away from the truth. In fact, it appears the LGBTQ has been increasingly turning to violent slogans. In Hyde Park a group of protestors disrupted a feminist gathering by unfurling a banner which read, “Arm Trans Kids.” The police had to step in to stop violence. A Christian school in Tennessee was shot up by a trangender person resulting in children and their teachers being killed. What a tragedy and the public has yet to hear about the police evidence of a violent transgender manifesto.

Yet, with all the crime, murder and mayhem that this cultural and spiritual war has caused, Christians and conservatives seem more likely to use the power of Parnell’s weapon,”The Power of a Boycott.” Will I be buying my favorite Nike sneakers so I can be comfortable when I walk in Disneyland? Will I be buying my next slow-cooker at Kohl’s while wearing a summer dress from Target? The answer is no, and I am proud to be boycotting these ungodly places. I hope that we can put these spiritually dead companies out of business. I also pray that we can plant a seed of truth about God’s ways with these deluded corporate staffers because there is still hope for them.

Make no mistake about it, this boycott will be hard. Can you tell your children no to Disneyland and why you have made that decision? I read that the new woke “Little Mermaid “movie killed it at the box office last weekend. A lot of people have to take their children to all the Disney movies and buy all the merch attached to every production. What is that really doing to our kids? What could our kids be doing instead. I assure you, they could be doin something better. They can be exploring nature, starting a garden, reading a bible. What about sports, or reading a good godly book? Knitting, crocheting or exploring a musical instrument. They could be learning how to help mom or dad or even build something. So many things beyond their phone or video game to do.

I already sourced tee shirts made by some local Christian ladies to wear. I bought some slippers from a small local merchant. I bought another brand of sneakers too. I can’t sell my soul for access to a sneaker or clothing. I can’t see my Lord mocked for sixty pieces of silver and be part of that. Can we defeat the corporations pulling this evil on us? I know that what matters is the way we conduct our lives. There will be a show of gay political muscle in Disney World in Orlando for June Pride festivities. They will be out in force to enforce their agenda for us. The battle lines are drawn and we all have to ask ourselves just whose side we are on, God or the Devil. If we are on God’s side there are biblical directives for what we must do and how we must do it. If we are on the side of the Devil there is no holds barred in this battle.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”- Ephesians 6:10-12

Our methods are of the godly type. We are not arming children, bombing or shooting up schools, heaven forbid. We know that eventually God will defeat the evil one but, until then we must represent what we believe and no longer think that it is okay to not get involved in the public discourse. We must stand up for biblical marriage, and biblical gender identity. We must preach to the unchurched, and teach repentance, forgiveness, and the resurrection and victory through Jesus the Savior. Are you in?

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” - 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.

Christian Housewife Reviews “Jesus Revolution” Movie

The story of the founding of Calvary Chapel comes into focus against the backdrop of the tumultuous 1960’s in the United States. It is the intersection of Chuck Smith, Lonnie Frisbee and the growing youth culture that created the story of the “Jesus Revolution.” Was God involved, or was it a pivot away from the truth? You decide.

Jonathan Roumie, the actor who plays Jesus in The Chosen series stars as Lonnie Frisbee and Kelsey Grammer of Frazier fame stars as Calvary Chapel’s Chuck Smith. The rest of the ensemble is well cast and provide excellent support for the powerful pairing of Roumie and Grammer. This movie tells the story of just what happened to Christianity in the United States during the years when the culture was being shaken by forces that continue to reverberate today. More about those forces later.

The movie opens with the juxtaposition of a business suit clad Chuck Smith shepherding a 25 small church of retirees while a Jesus-like Lonnie Frisbee clad in Jesus-like robes is cavorting among hippies, and druggies with his own unique shepherding style. The two would come together and help inaugurate the so-called “Jesus Revolution,” which for better or worse was a shaking of the established church experience.

This movie has caused a lot of infighting among the family of believers. The Bible does leave room for believers to challenge one another as regards the life and death spiritual dance that, like it or not, we all must dance. In fact, so many people were down on this movie, that I even contemplated if it would be a good idea for me to see it at all. The objections were numerous. Did the so-called Jesus Revolution help usher in a church experience of emotionalism rather than rational faith and worship? Were the people being baptized in the waters off Newport Beach really converted?

I did decide to see the movie because I thought the Jesus Revolution, starting in California, was a historically powerful moment in the life of the church and of the world. While many in Western Civilization were turning to Eastern religions, the Jesus Revolution sought to make Jesus relevant to a new generation of people. The Jesus Movement also has a lot to do with the current spiritual climate of Christian churches and music today. It also spawned many young pastors who went on to add more Calvary Chapels and other non-denominational churches around the country. Greg Laurie, who has one of the largest churches in the U.S.A, is one of them.

This movie is based on the book of the same name by Harvest Christian Fellowship Pastor Greg Laurie with Ellen Vaughn. The movie tells the story of young Greg Laurie struggling with an alcoholic mother and searching for some meaning in life.

He was caught up in the sex, drug, and rock and roll culture of Southern California. Then, he meets a bad drug trip, his future wife Cathe, Lonnie Frisbee which all conspired together. by God’s grace,  to lead him towards his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This movie honestly showcases a clash of great significance. That of  the established church which, although it had perhaps a dated formality, also had a sense of the sacred. As opposed to a casual, come as you are relevant context which some have come to think veered away from the biblical definition of worship.

The movie shows the behind the scene making of a 1971 Time magazine cover story announcing the “Jesus Revolution.” A reporter from that magazine was dispatched to find out what was  going on with a growing number of hippies and surfers in Southern California who were giving up drugs, and getting baptized. The movement had grown so large that its’ adherents were doing bible study and worship service under a big circus tent serving to cast a comic light on the situation. It didn’t help that the moniker of “Jesus Freaks” were associated with them too.

So what are some of the consequences and implications of the “Jesus Movement” for today? I would have to say that introduction of youthful music changed the course of Christian music and made it the billion dollar industry that it is today.

That music has penetrated every denomination in one way or the other. Either people hear at least some of that music in their church, on a local christian music station or follow the music and musicians and purchase their music.

Whether you like rap, pop, country or any number of other musical styles, you can probably find christian music being made in that genre. There are a number of Christian music award shows which are every bit up to all the other established musical entertainment awards shows. Some Christians feel that the music doesn’t always meet the standards of orthodoxy. That is true, sometimes it does not.

But, what it does do is get people thinking, singing and perhaps meets them where they are in their life and try’s to bring those listeners closer to Jesus. From there I would suggest that you join a bible-centered church, learn what it means to accept and follow Jesus. After that, there might be some songs that you come to learn are not worth your time. As far as other effects of the movement, one might say the casual dress mode of most churches in the USA and the coffee culture that has sprung up in many a church lobby can be traced back to it.

However, the timing of this movie’s release leads me to wonder if those involved in its’ production were hoping that a  similar movement of the Holy Spirit might again ignite a new generation of people to know and follow the Savior of the world Jesus Christ. That some might be saved from the increasing anarchy, and evil which have invaded our world and destroyed family, truth and justice.

I recommend this movie to my readers. It might help bring some much needed dialogue to the body of believing Christians as concerns where the church is and where it should be two thousand years after the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ..

AI OK?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been making huge headlines lately. This is a topic that I never liked thinking about or debating. For a person like myself whose whole blog is dedicated to life experiences and faith intersections that attitude may seem improbable. But, I have indeed went to extraordinary lengths to avert my eyes when the topic of advances in artificial intelligence come up on a news site. I have even been known to immediately shut the television off or switch channels when the ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence are about to be discussed.

As much as I hate that dude Sigmund Freud, it is pretty clear that in this case, he got my number when he discussed the mechanism of avoidant behavior. Avoidant behavior occurs when in response to a difficult problem or situation one just does everything they can to avoid dealing with it. Why would the topic of artificial intelligence be that overwhelming for me? Why don’t I applaud the progress that AI promises?

I got a bad feeling about AI the first time that I ever heard of it. Artificial Intelligence origins go back to the early 1950’s when scientists at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Stanford University began to conceive of the future advances that would be made possible by computers. Two names that were pivotal in moving forward the science of AI were John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky.

They were both professors at MIT at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. They are credited with being some of the earliest researchers interested in creating a machine based intelligence. MIT engineers had simultaneously created an early version of a “robotic arm” that could play ping-pong. As far as Stanford University goes, it had S.A.I.L. That stands for Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Both of these laboratories had an enormous amount of military and government funding with which to work. Red flag maybe?

The visions and dreams espoused by AI researchers always seemed less humanity enhancing and more humanity enslaving whenever I thought about them. Also, some of the scientists in this field seemed more like cult followers than scientists. The proximity of machine intelligence and robotic capabilities goes back to the very early days of research, and therein lies the rub. Then came a time after the initial excitement on the topic that it was no longer garnering the attention nor the funding it needed to continue. In the early 1970’s the AI community overpromised and underdelivered. In fact, a number of companies with AI in their names went out of business. This  time is often referred to as “AI winter.” During that time, disciples akin to some sort of demonic Star Wars Jedi knights went underground and kept the dream alive of machine learning and continued to contribute to its’ research.

Now, this body of research has advanced so much that AI is poised to control every aspect of our life. It will be involved in health care doing surgery, it will run our airplanes and other modes of transportation. It can write better books than we can and beat us in Jeopardy and Chess. Robotic dogs with artificial intelligence just went into a collapsed parking garage in New York CIty to search for survivors. AI fire fighters fight chemical blazes that would kill us, isn’t that great? Yes, if we used this as a proper tool but, the scuttlebutt is that ain’t gonna happen!

Let’s think about what a good tool is. A tool is something that we invent that makes a job easier and supplements our intellectual or physical abilities. So, something might be too heavy for us to lift but, the invention of the wheel means that we can use a wedge, another great simple machine and foist it onto that cart with wheels and the burden is light enough for us to move. Brilliant. You know what I love about the invention of the first car, the Model T? That when you were done with it, you could shut it off and it wasn’t tracking you all the time!

Our tools have always had the capability of backfiring, but never like with AI. The best of the science fiction writers saw this coming as did the biblical prophecy scholars. Sin is like dust, it gets into everything even our precious inventions. In our God rejecting world, the dangers of technology going awry are at the highest threat level. The movement that says science will answer all the questions and they don’t need God, are moving us towards societal disaster. God leads us to holiness and mitigates our sin nature whether we are scientists, sanitation workers, teachers or preachers.

The atheist scientists that brought you COVID, are working on artificial intelligence for our lives. Oh boy. God in the equation of science equals order and sanity but without God, the temptations are too great. The promise of what AI can do for the non-believer remind me of the Gollum character in “Lord of the Rings,” and Eve in the Garden of Eden. All this you can have, just follow Satan.

Do I believe the devil is in the details? Yes, he always is. Those who don’t know that and don’t recognize how he operates are victims of the evil he is perpetuating. Do you really want to have nuclear launches controlled with AI? ChatGBT has already been shown to have a liberal bias in matters of politics, gender issues, and a morally relativistic bent. In that fact, AI is already leading people away from the one true God and the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ. Don’t be fooled AI is not as smart as you think or it is smarter than you think.

Every nation with a modicum of power is going after precious AI. Vladimir Putin once said, that the country that led in technologies using artificial intelligence will dominate the world. Follow the rolling ball, rule the world who wants to do that? The common thinking that I have heard is whoever leads in AI in 2030, will rule the world until 2100. This all perfectly fits in with end times biblical prophecy. It fits like a glove actually.

In the fight for world dominance we know that Satan will appear at some point soon. But right now it is like an AI prize fight. It’s China in the first round hitting hard but the USA floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. The E.U. is waiting to fight the winner. Just like any prize fight each competitor has their strengths and weaknesses and each country has attributes which could bring it into the ascendency.

Is it China with its’ army from the East (Rev 16:12-The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its’ water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.) or is the anti-Christ emerging from the E.U.? (Rev 13 :2-And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.) Will New York being a contender for the whore of Babylon affect the United States standing? (Rev 17:1b-2-the great prostitute who sits by many waters. With the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries)

However it plays out, we know that AI is not OK. While good achievements will emanate from this technology, it appears to me to be the technology that has the greatest capability of being a tool for controlling the entire world. Yet, I believe that we have reached the point of no return, this genie ain’t going back in its’ bottle. At the beginning of the nuclear age, people had a sense of the power of this invention and an understanding that this was bigger than anything that had come before. As he watched the first successful nuclear weapon detonation physicist Robert Oppenheimer famously remarked, that “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Artificial Intelligence is the next big step that mankind will embark upon and many people have varying reactions to that. That is how it was at Los Alamos when the first nuclear weapon exploded. There were varying reactions. Some were reconciled to its’ inevitability on the world stage, some cried, and some even laughed. As a Christian, I am ready for what is written in the Bible to occur. That which is written will come about and it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to keep close to God, tell others about Jesus. Don’t be bowled over by all the promises of AI, there may be some blessings in it but be wary of its’ dark side.

Banking, Trump and Easter

What do I know about banking? After all, I am an average Christian housewife who is more concerned with what snacks I will make to bring to church for the next bible study than the status of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). When the news came in about the failure of SVB, I was doing my daily rotation of the meat I was curing for my Ode to Ireland church snack menu. I was making Irish Soda bread, and Irish Spiced Beef (a dish that is usually served at Christmas time on the old sod). That would be accompanied by Dubliner Cheese and some chocolate shamrocks.

Irish Spice Beef has been made for nearly 300 years. I went Irish spiced beef crazy several weeks before St. Patrick’s Day watching every video and reading every article that I could get my hands on outlining variations on that classic recipe. As I was blissfully ensconced in food history, reality had a stark way of butting in. This time in a big way. The markets roiled along with my investments with the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). Next, Credit Suisse, who has been doing a swan dance for a long time, finally breathed its’ last breath and it too collapsed. Could Deutsch Bank be next? What after that?

Whenever there is a bank or financial institution in its’ death knells, it is a rare opportunity to observe what goes on behind the scences. Always, there are those insiders who advised you to buy shares of that stock while they themselves were dumping it. Nothing to see there! People getting their bonuses in the middle of March, just before the institution goes belly up, nothing to see there either.

Since COVID hit, nothing has been normal. Don’t get me wrong, I believe the agenda that we see front and center now, was brewing like a wicked tea in the background for years. When people were at their very weakest it was then time to bring out all the wicked dinners and force-feed them to the world. The world has eaten of it.

The banking system is something that the average person depends on everyday to build their life both now and in the future. Have you noticed that all the things that we depend upon can not be trusted anymore? The banking system is one of those things. The fiscal policies of bank executives and nations don’t seem to make sense yet we are powerless to do anything about it. Silicon Valley Bank had only one investment banker on the bank board. That does not seem correct to me. The rest of the board were people who were given their cushy, lucrative positions because they were Obama and/or Democratic Party donors. Is that any way to run a bank?

And while the bank may have funded some good tech start-ups and the California wine industry, it could not do so without leaving the distinct impression of doing business based on political nepotism. SVB bank had a way of supporting the wineries of their friends such as the governor of California or of the green agenda even if those projects were a poor investment. The bank gave over seven million dollars to Black Lives Matters and other anarchist causes.

Why can’t banks just focus on the business of banking and stop being social activists? Why couldn’t they carefully scrutinize the loans they gave out? Why have banks abandoned age old wisdom about how to keep customers money safe? The answer is that banks have either been forced by governments to loan money out in unsafe ways or the bankers were trained by anti-capitalist universities. These once higher places of learning have turned into communist party finishing schools teaching radical philosophy whilst deconstructing traditional thought and reason.

Then, the circus came to New York City. I don’t mean Cirque du Soleil or the new and re-imagined Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Circus. That might be fun. I am talking about the crazy circus. The type of circus that gives you nightmares. Where crazy soul-stealing clowns come out of a little car. When Donald Trump was indicted I was horrified but not surprised.

The powers that are running things have been after him since he was first elected the 45th President of the United States. By doing what the voters wanted him to do and not following along with the evil clown culture of political usurpation that has swept over the United States he put himself in the crosshairs of evil.

If Donald Trump had just continued his life as a business man, he would be on easy street right now. As soon as he got it into his mind to listen to people and try to fulfill the mandate that he was elected to fulfill, his fate was sealed. It would be just a matter of time before he got arrested, investigated, fined or worse. Even though I knew it was coming, seeing the obvious abuse of power to stop Donald Trump from running in the next presidential election was more than I could take. I was just starting to come down with something on top of all that.

I was embarrassed for New York State, which is the place that I was born and raised. The corruption was over the top and it saddened me greatly to see how far a once great city could fall. It was like going to the circus and watching all the crazy goings on when reality is temporarily suspended during the performance. Only now it was not a day of fantasy, it was a reality and Donald Trump was getting arrested. If they can weaponize the FBI, and the New York CIty’s Attorney General against a former President of the United States there is nothing they can not do.

Meanwhile, Hunter Biden and the current President have skated past every allegation or authentically proven corruption scandal with narry a mention of it in the mainstream media. The current president does not seem fit to conduct the duties of his Office yet there is no journalistic interest in exploring that topic. I know that the free press is dead.  A press that used to be known for its’ scrutiny. When tyranny descends the free press is one of the first things to go and it has.

As the Trump case was beginning to unfold, I came down with a cold, flu or perhaps COVID. It was a weird illness. Why couldn’t I even get a normal cold or flu? We are definitely living in an age where novel illnesses abound. It is written in the Bible that in the end times that there would be pestilence. Marburg is out breaking in Africa, a crazy rare fungus that has only been present in hospital settings is now poised to break that barrier on the eastern coast of the United States. The list goes on and on. None of this is normal. Thinking of all of this culminated in what had to be defined as a spiritual battle of sorts for me.

The answer to all my questions and the end of my spiritual battle came as Easter approached. The message of the Bible directs and guides us towards all things holy and righteous. It gives us clarity on everything that we see that doesn’t make sense. The truth of our changing world hurts sometimes. The banking system is in trouble, the political system is in trouble but Jesus has overcome. He will bring us through the persecution, the injustice and ultimately will judge the wrong-doers.

I am grateful for the direction my relationship with Jesus Christ has given me. Although God will allow people to sin if they want, he will not allow it to go on forever. As I stated earlier, all the things that we depend upon can no longer be trusted, that is all except God, who is the same yesterday, today and always. I know that, like the old song said, because he lives, I can face tomorrow.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

I am struggling this week about whether I should attend a Women’s Ministry Event at my Church. The Bible study is written by popular women’s ministry speaker, Priscilla Shirer. I am sure many of you have either attended a Bible study or one of the live streaming events that she has created over the years. She has written many Christian books and even acted in the movie, “War Room.”

Two churches which I have attended over the years have hosted Priscilla Shirer events. Each time, these events kicked up a lot of controversy among female congregants. There were those who loved her and those who thought that she crossed the line. The first time that I heard of her was at a Calvary Chapel event for Women.

I was waiting on a line to sign up for that upcoming event when I saw a sister in Christ heading towards me. Priscilla’s event are not free. By the time I contributed for the live stream and bought the book, I was into her for the double digits. Not to mention that DVD’s of the event were also available if you wanted to spend more money. I didn’t care though, I thought it would be great to share time with the ladies of my church and study the Word of God.

That was until Theresa* interrupted me and asked if she could have a word with me. “Sure Theresa, what’s up?” She obviously wanted some privacy because she asked me if we could just step outside of church for a moment. When I assented, she very quickly poured out her mixed feelings about this upcoming Priscilla Shirer event to me.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world -1 John 4:1. Far from making any character assaults or anything of that nature, Theresa seemed to have some genuine questions about Priscilla’s orthodoxy to the faith. She thought that Priscilla veered off at times into being lead by her emotions. Also, she depended on too many personal stories to make her points instead of relying more on the Bible. Finally, she seemed to be a proponent of contemplative prayer and have a controversial friendship with Beth Moore.

I told Theresa that these all seemed to be valid questions and that she should either discuss it with the Pastor’s wife who was the head of the Women’s Ministry or go to the Pastor or an elder. They have the responsibility of overseeing all church activities. Theresa seemed  hesitate when I said this. When I ask her why, she said because the Pastor would be hesitant to micro-manage the women’s ministry event lest his wife get discouraged.

I again reiterated that it is the Pastor’s job but, also a husband’s job to direct his wife to that which was righteous. Theresa agreed with me but, said the deciding factor for her not to bring the matter up, was the lack of any elders who would be willing to stand up to the Pastor in matters of orthodoxy. Boy, this sounds like politics.

I was skeptical going to that Ministry event especially after my conversation with Theresa but, shouldn’t we always be skeptical? After all, there are many false teachers. In fact, more and more every day. I was not impressed by the event that day. Priscilla is a motivational speaker no doubt. But, what is she motivating people to do?

Her style seemed to me to rely on woman’s empowerment themes. My problem with that is God is in the people empowerment theme. There is no difference to God whether you are a man or a woman so why do we make such a fuss about the differences? Men and women have different roles to play in the life of the church, and in the family. We have different issues and approaches at times. I think that should be handled with a gentle touch always bringing God into the discussion. I don’t think Priscilla Shirer did that.

The world is now breaking up into subcultures or maybe into spiritual and political armed camps. Our model as Christians is to be a “body of Christ.” The emphasis is Christ as the head of the church and we, ie. all the parts of the body working together in unity under him. So, we need to make sure our bible studies represent that. Although, if you hear Priscilla tell it at one of her events, she is hearing from God so you don’t have to worry.

As I left my first Priscilla Shirer event, I was left with some questions and thoughts that she had strayed from some godly principles of teaching. After all the Bible does say not many should teach because it has to be done correctly. The Church congregation depends upon solid bible teaching for spiritual nurturing and growth. If people are not taught correctly, they will stray from the faith and from the truth. With all at stake, I think Theresa was right to question a bible studies foundations if she was not certain.

When i got home and began to read my Priscilla Shirer book, I did not feel that it gave me what I thought was the meat of the gospel. I felt there was a lot of fat and uneatable parts of that bible study sandwich. We are told, to test the spirit. Having done that I felt that I would not chose to attend one of her events again. However, the issue is again popping up because the Pastor’s wife, at my new Church, is hosting a Shirer event this March.

I began rethinking the issue lately. Can I put my name on that Women’s Ministry Sign-up sheet when I feel that Priscilla Shirer misses the mark? The Pastor’s wife seems so excited about this event, am I wrong in thinking she might be mad at me if I do not attend? Here I go, I am about to air the Christian dirty laundry. Wait for it, wait for it.

Sometimes we take salvation into our own hands and push people into participating in church events and guilt trip them if they do not attend. Example, oh, we all missed you on Sunday! I am expecting the hard sell at some point. What will I do? After all, I am not a theologian, I don’t have all the answers. But, I have the Holy Spirit and the Word of God that guides and directs me in my life. I don’t need these fanciful and emotional churning events to challenge me to go to the next level with the Lord.

Hasn’t the Lord done the work on the cross?  Haven’t I repented and accepted that offer of salvation? Furthermore, the Lord is the center of my life everyday and everyway. Do I really have to do pseudo-psychological exercises to unblock my power to pray or has the Lord already done that work in me which from grace to grace I receive? Do I confess my sins privately and corporately on a regular basis, the answer is yes, yes, and yes to all the above questions.

Priscilla Shirer is a gifted and spirited communicator. But just what is she communicating? Is it the gospel of Jesus, or is it something else? If we were all free to ask these kind of questions at our churches without fear of reprisals wouldn’t we be a more mature church? I could be wrong in my estimation of this women’s speaker, but each of us needs to daily make a lot of judgement calls on what is worthy of our time, and trust.

The clock is ticking away for signing up for this event. I know that if I do not sign my name and put money in the pocket of someone whom I do not fully trust to guide me spiritually I will be asked by the Pastor’s wife to give an account of why I chose not to attend. Perhaps she will tell me it is a fantastic event which she thinks will spiritually uplift me. I am sure she believes that.

However she inquires, or try’s to persuade me to attend the upcoming event, I know that I should tell her the truth. I am not certain how that will fly. Wouldn’t it be great if people, especially people at church, would respect your right to work through these issues? It would even be nice if she felt comfortable telling me why she thought that I was wrong. Or, if having heard my arguments she had a change of heart.

Unfortunately, it often does not go that way. I wonder if the Pastor’s loving heart towards his wife resulted in him not exactly scrutinizing this event. That was the allegation that Theresa made to me all those years ago about Pastor Larry.* Even my own husband wants me to go to this event and fake it if I have to. He does not want me to offend the Pastor’s wife. I played him some YouTube videos of Priscilla being controversial. I can say that he had some questions of his own about her. I still got no support from him about this. He just does not want me to create a possible social faux pas. Wow, is that all church is today. I thought it was about real life and death issues.

Should I Stay or Should I go? I already know the answer to that, but will I have the courage to stand up for what I believe in? 2 Timothy 4:3- “And in the last days men will no longer endure sound doctrine but embrace doctrines of demons.”

Crossing Swords at the Coffee Shop?

Coffee shops are great places to hang out, don’t you think? A lot of these places have popped up over time so a business often has to stand out in some way in order to get their market share. So, how does such a business attract customers?  Well, there is decor and music. Those two factors alone can do much to create a buzz, and I don’t mean from the caffeine!

Of course your coffee bean is very important. What type of bean do you use? Does the store roast the coffee bean and grind it right there in the shop? Does the venue offer food, if so, is it a full meal or just desserts? Do you have any store perks like a rewards card? Event hosting can be a big deal. You can have musical events. You can also host knitting groups, parent/babies groups or senior citizen coffee klatches.

The financial bottom line can be tight and competition fierce, so you had better bring your game if you wish to compete in this arena. Let’s not forget the cost of  utilities, rent, the price of coffee and other necessary supplies. How much money you bring in can sometimes just not cut it especially with the price of everything going up.

I love to find the best places to enjoy a fresh, well-brewed cup of coffee. You can say I am a little nerdy as concerns the coffee experience. It can be a cappuccino, a cup of joe, java, espresso, lattes, cafe con leche, or pour over. Whatever type of coffee it is, I say thank heaven for this exhilarating and tasty beverage.

So, it was not long after I moved in to my new house that I began to go on a coffee crawl of the area. I was on the hunt. The first place that I went to was “Ivory.” * It had an old-time storefront that I definitely would have walked right past had it not been recommended by several people.

The name, “Ivory” connoting images of  scrimshaw or ornate middle eastern boxes did not match the rather drab and outdated appearance that the exterior of the store projected. The inside was renovated nicely and had a rustic appeal with locally made live-edge wooden tables. That doesn't match the name either. The coffee varied depending on the barista but, it ran weak for my tastes. My husbands coffee was cold. Note to self: always ask for an extra shot of espresso at this place.

The pros of this place were their monthly specials. They were always creative and made with high caliber ingredients. The cons were that the Christian owner supported charities that had a reputation for their anti-Christian agendas. Note to self: if my church ever closes down, don’t attend this church because it is one of those social justice not godly justice places!

Then there was the industrial soho chic coffee shop. They created an image and took inspiration from the industrial history of the town. I think it is great to preserve history. They have even bought a huge industrial coffee roaster that looks quite at home in the former factory building that the coffee shop is now housed in. It has been a long time since the arrival of that big Italian roaster and I have yet to see it in operation. Not so easy huh? What else is not so easy, is the gay flag that greets you upon entry into the place. Now that I think of it, perhaps coffee shops have always been where rebellion begins. Haven’t many of the worldwide revolutions began in such places?  Did Satan and his angels start planning their rebellion in a coffee shop, I am now wondering.

Stiff competition and an excellent bean is housed in the old Victorian “Frau Haus”*. What an amazing setting. The brew is smooth, and rich. The bean roasted perfectly. The food made right there on the premises never hits a wrong note. This one is going to be a contender! Finally, there was another place that I was drawn to for a variety of reasons. Not the least of which was convenience. It just so happened to be right on my route to church. It offered a drive-thru which is very convenient especially on those mornings when I did not get up as early as I would have liked. But, this place would suddenly present itself on the front lines of the culture war before long and require my response.

Whenever I go to a coffee shop for the first time, I always order a black coffee or an espresso. This is because it offers the best test of what the coffee is all about. Accessing coffee begins with smell, and taste tells you if it is worth a second visit. So, my first foray into “Happy Puppy”* was quite ordinary. Disarmed of my “full armor of God”  by such a cute shop name and by the well-done black cold brew coffee that I ordered, I did not expect what happened next.

There was a long line of customers one day. The weather was sunny, and I just couldn’t decide what to order. I told the owner, who was at the window, that I am trying to decide what to order and I wondered what he would recommend. His face belied his proclivity when he replied “our best seller is the “Bad B****!” * I was floored how a grown man could look me right in the eyes with obvious delight in this profanely titled coffee and not have one bit of embarrassment. In fact, it was quite the opposite, he was obviously titillated like a wayward school boy.

My immediate reply was, “I could not possibly order a coffee so-named and I will have a cold-brew.” I left knowing something had changed. I could not and should not un-remember what had happened. Try as I might to avoid it, I knew this was going to “come to a head.” The flesh part of me wanted to just go on enjoying that cup of coffee that some are touting as the best in the valley. But, that Holy Spirit powered, blood-bought Christian soul had discernment and I knew that I should not be there.

However, time would pass before there would be a crossing of the swords. In the meantime, accolades were accruing concerning the Happy Puppy Shop. First, the cute name. The name shows how much they love dogs. Next, a headline in a local newspaper showcased a charitable act when they donated their daily  proceeds towards a scholarship fund for a local boy who died in an accident. The community came out in droves to get Bad B****’s all day long to support this cause.

After that, they again made local news when it was announced that a second coffee venue would be opening soon. This one was large and decorated perfectly in the ever present mid-century modern decor as my husband found out when he was in the area. After he went in and enjoyed a great cup of coffee he was eager to have me see the store. He even brought me home a coffee cake which made me think that I should go in and give them another try.

The new place was very charming and the decorations were heads and tails above some of the other places that I have described (except Frau Haus).  The dessert was not as good this time but I was able to buy a Happy Puppy sweatshirt and a candle in the gift shop in situ. They also had houseplants on sale which had bible quotes on their labels. Hmm.

I remained leery of the place and the final straw occurred just in time for Valentine’s Day. I was looking for a cute place to visit on Valentine’s Day. So, I looked up Happy Puppy on Facebook to see what they had on their menu for the month. They have quite a sense of humor at the best of times, and cross the line at the worst of time. Just to be perfectly clear, the line I am talking about is God’s line of sin. That has to be a believer’s bottom line of behavior.

Their menu was geared to garner Valentine attention. The type of attention that might arouse a college students interest or a bored housewives’ rebellion. Selling sex is the age old marketing tool that will always manage to sell your product. It seems that beside some fun and innocent coffee combinations they were hawking “Talk to me dirty” coffee and “slutty brownie” coffee.

This was the final straw for me and I was saddened that I would not be going into this shop ever again. I immediately wondered if I should send an email or phone to voice my objection. It is never easy to do something like that because people no longer wish to hear anyone’s opinion that does not line up with their own. There is no longer the “customer is always right” ethic either. It is not a big stretch to go from Bad B**** coffee to “Slutty Brownie” coffee. I think I just uncovered the truth about the hearts of the husband and wife who run this shop. I had to be prepared for the fact that they may not care what I think.

But, should I as a Christian object to the sexualization of my coffee? What does speaking like this say about God’s teachings concerning the purpose and sanctity of sexuality and marriage? It is sad to think that this is not just innocent humor but a corruption of that which is good. Have we as Christian’s failed in our role to maintain public morality and standards? The answer to that is of course we have.

Did anyone see or hear about the Grammy’s the other night? I haven’t watched the Grammy’s in years but, apparently it has reached an all new and unholy level. The world is now solidly in two camps, God’s camp or the devil’s camp. There are only two choices and the things we say and do every day make us closer to God or to Satan. As I thought about sending an email to the owners of this shop to voice my disapproval, I realized that I couldn’t wear my warm and very stylish Happy Puppy sweatshirt anymore. I couldn’t even donate it to charity because that would be like donating a bad book to charity, it is not helpful or Christian to do that.

How disgusted I was with myself that I even missed the shirt for one moment. That was certainly a spiritually lazy moment for me. Forgive me Father. As I write this, I am looking at an expensive Happy Puppy sweatshirt stuffed into my waste bin and I can not wait for garbage day. Next, I sent the owners an email thanking them for that which was good and questioning that which was bad. My best hope was that they might re-consider the direction that their business was pivoting in. My worst fear was a nasty crossing of the swords where I might get scratched up a bit. No matter what the outcome, I hoped and prayed that I might plant a seed.

The email was answered rather quickly and I was given sloppy justifications for the use of straight up curse words on their menu. Further, I was told how unfair it was to suggest that they were selling sex. Are the owners so innocent of the meaning of life or just surrounded by those like them who call this behavior normal. Is this the first clue for them of wrongdoing? Perhaps, it was.

Within days of me sending this email, Happy Puppy was again in the local news. This time it was to announce the grand opening of yet another Happy Puppy Coffee Shop. Is this business actually succeeding because it is simply catering to what the public wants? The flavored coffee, and music are youth oriented, and the humor drenched with sexual innuendo draws too. There is a market for this but is it right?  “What good is it if we gain the whole world but lose our immortal souls?”-Mark 8:6

These spiritual wars have happened before as outlined in the Old Testament. The Old Testament gives accounts of the spiritual rise and fall of the Hebrew nation. They would alternate between following God and rebelling against God. Each time they rebelled, God would send prophets to warn them of the consequences of those actions. The time is coming when our rebellion will be punished, we have had plenty of warning too. That is the spiritual law of God.

What does one email sent to one little coffee shop matter in the spiritual scope of things? What about an email to a school board to object to a curriculum? Every daily decision that we make to ignore evil is a day evil grows larger and larger.

I told a non-believer what I had experienced at the coffee shop. I was eager to hear what she thought was happening. She thought there were two types of people who are visiting that coffee shop. Firstly, people who love the profanity laced hype because it represents them. Secondly, the Christian who knows the shop is ungodly but can not give up their favorite flavored coffee, hangout place, the convenience of the location, or they are simply afraid to take a stand. I agree with Lauren* in her analysis but I would add the category of  Christian in name only.

Meaning those people who state their religion as being “Christian” but, may just be culturally attached to the family history of this practice or attend a fallen away church and are unaware of real biblical truths. Suffice it to say that continuing to go to a coffee shop and ordering a slutty brownie shows no christian maturity and no Holy Spirit power.

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.-2Timothy 3:1-4

* some of the details and the names of the people, shops and coffee were changed so that no one would throw a brick thru my window. The story is true and I hope we can see the lesson therein.

New Year, Your Direction

“O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my request before you and wait in expectations”-Psalm 5:3.

New Year’s has cultural significance as a time of evaluation. It has come to signify that month of the year where we sit back and reflect on that which has past and that which is to come. That which has passed in our own life, that of our family, nation and our world. What do we make of it all and what decisions do we make as a result?

Traditionally, we try to right our course in the journey of life at this time of year if that would seem warranted. Some areas of correction include: health, education, career, financial and relationships. The means of moving forward always include our spiritual outlook. What do we believe and whom do we believe. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you”- Matthew 6:33

The Bible places a value on truth, not the kind of truth that Pontius Pilate was questioning when he uttered the famous line, “What is truth” (Matthew 6:33) as he interrogated Jesus. Jesus pointed out the truth of scriptures and further pointed to himself as the “truth.”

The truth that I am thinking of, is the truth about ourselves. Do we need to lose a few pounds. Do we need to change careers? Do we date people who are bad for us? Do we prefer to spend time with our dogs or cats over people? Can we be brutally honest about ourselves? Without the ability to “consider our ways,” as the Bible calls it, we are hopelessly relegated to live less than the life that we should. “Now therefore thus saith the Lord of Hosts; consider your ways”- Haggai1:5.

It is hard to be honest today primarily because we are living during times of exceeding deception. It is all around us and we have grow accustomed to it. “My son is so smart,” when he is not. “My daughter is such a nurturer,” when she is the biggest bully ever. “My boss didn’t appreciate me” when the truth is, you didn't appreciate him or her. “My dogs are my grand-babies,” oye vey! No one will hold you accountable because they are either afraid to or they don’t know the truth.

We all have things to think about this year. During the COVID lockdowns, many people in Westchester County, New York were getting in the best shape of their life. They decided that the only way to sublimate their rage against the world not being their oyster was by letting off some steam in an intense workout. I would see them speed walk or bike by my house every day.

I, on the other hand, put on what I affectionately call my “COVID 25,” You have no doubt heard of the common phenomena of first year college students putting on weight due to the stress of being away from home for the first time. Perhaps without parental support they eat the wrong foods or spend too much time at the bar.

Much as I tried to fight the spiritual battle of COVID with God as the center of my coping, I failed to keep strong as often as I should have. “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”- 1 Thessalonians 5:18. When I prayed, and read my Bible, I had clarity of this scriptural truth. When I missed the fellowship of my church and focused on my fears, I ate comfort food.Ugly Truth Number 1.

Truth Number 2. I had been ignoring some medical information that I had received at my own peril. I was told that the pressure on my eye seemed high but yet I did not seem to have glaucoma. I had struggled to find an eye doctor after my doctor retired. My former eye doc was the perfect combination of knowledge, and bedside manner. He had compassion and competency. He had reached the height of his field and had offices on Park Avenue in New York City.

I always knew that when he retired that he would be hard to replace. When they made him they broke the mold. I looked for friendly recommendations but still had a hard time finding my next eye care professional. When I did, she was not a keeper. She was insensitive and her office seemed like a medical mill dedicated to getting people in and out. When she told me, she does not know why I do not have glaucoma she did not really explain what she meant by that. She said, we will just have to watch it. She made a lot of thoughtless comments that day.

I was shocked and fearful of losing my sight. I also did not feel she would be the professional that I would want in charge of my eye health. As I began to search for a new eye doctor in Westchester County New York nothing went smoothly. Like getting a plumber when I need one, no one seemed to have someone that they would wish to recommend. As time when by, I found myself frozen with fear. I was afraid to face this health challenge.

Then, COVID hit and it was all too easy to get out of doctor’s appointments since many of the physicians were only dealing with emergency cases. One ophthalmologist that I was considering even closed his office for a short time. He had to redesign his office in order to decrease the chances of anyone getting COVID. Shortly after that, he went into early retirement.

I prayed to the Lord to give me the strength to face this challenge and to help me to see even this with spiritual eyes and wisdom. I knew that as I reflected on things that I needed to change in 2023, that only through the Lord, with his strength could I face and get through this issue. “Do not be anxious about anything  but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God”-Philippians 4:6.

January is also the month where I will try to approach estranged family members. Ugly Truth 3: Once I became a Christian, it was a foregone conclusion that my family would take sides on the great spiritual divide that is gripping our world. Issues ranging from whom I voted for in the last election, gender fluidity and sustainability have created a civil war in my family and in our world. With the New Year, I can’t help but try to approach some family members and try once more to fight these battles with the full armor of God. Like the apostle Paul when he went to preach to the Corinthians, I have to try and keep my total focus on the truth about Jesus Christ lest the debate devolve into an intellectual exercise in futility.

As I sought for a New Direction in this New Year, I found that all that I had put off and all that I feared were merely false evidence appearing real. With small efforts at reducing my eating portions, I have already lost some weight. My fatalistic fears about my eyes have not been realized. With fear in my belly, trepidation in my heart and a prayer on my lips constantly, I made an appointment with a new doctor. The results of that exam were good news. Plus, this doctor is a keeper. Thank you Lord for your healing grace and new beginnings! Verse for the New Year: “Create in me a clean heart O God; and renew a right spirit within me”- Psalm 51:10.

As for my relationship problems, I will make an approach this week with much prayer and dependence upon the Holy Spirit’s guidance. As 2023 has begun, I hope that you will keep it real, pray and seek a New Year, Your Direction. 💕

Christmas 2022- Who is Jesus?

The headlines concerning just Who is Jesus were wild this year. Some news stories suggested that if Jesus were here today, he would march in a gay pride parade. Some professor tried to prove that Jesus was transgender and it made international headlines. Other stories suggest that some World Economic Forum participants have openly discussed Jesus with much derision, even suggesting that Jesus is fake news. In the cancel culture that we live in, why would any of us be surprised if that were true?

As we arrive at Christmas 2022, we even find the President of the United States giving a Christmas message without mentioning the name of Jesus. He seemed to do everything to avoid making a clear and affirming  Christian message. It seems Santa Claus has replaced Jesus as the center of Christmas. The popular culture has successfully replaced the message of the Savior of the world being born in Bethlehem with a message centered on gift-giving, entertainment and general peace, love and other feel good stuff.

🎶 “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” not because a Savior was born who could save us from our sins.  What about the ever popular , 🎶🎶 “all I want for Christmas is you”,  and by “you” I don’t mean Jesus. It is official, we have cancelled the real Christmas! The Bible predicted as much when it said in 2 Thessalonians 2:3a Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless there be a falling away first. Meaning the time of the Antichrist will not come until many have rejected God. It makes sense too.

We need God Almighty to make sense of our lives and our world. If we reject the message of the Bible and instead turn inward to our own thoughts and directives we would be easy prey for the Antichrist. If history has taught us anything it is that people look for leadership in all the wrong places.

Who is Jesus? I could think of no better thoughts for Christmas 2022 than to contemplate and reaffirm the truth about what we celebrate on Christmas. Jesus had an interesting conversation with his disciples in the gospel of Luke 9:18-22 which mirrors the ideas that we are exploring today. In the context of Luke we find that Jesus had given authority to his disciples to preach and heal in his name. As they ministered to the crowd they were beginning to understand many things that Jesus had taught them.

There was more equipping yet to come as Jesus prepared them and us for a greater understanding. And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias, and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; saying, the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. - Luke 9:18-22.

The crowds, then and now. have a lot to say about just Who is Jesus? Some people thought Jesus was a prophet. What has changed? Today there are whole religions who believe Jesus is merely a prophet. Some people thought that he was a popular reformer such as John the Baptist, many today believe Jesus is a sort of Che Guevara or a gender equity activist.

The power of this central historical figure has never been lost on many movers and shakers so, they seek to co-opt his power and message to propel their agenda to the forefront. Political movements have done it and the Antichrist will do it too. Jesus explored this topic with his closest disciples. He wanted them and us, to know that there will be controversy around just Who is Jesus.

Jesus asked his disciples and us the second question, which is who do you say that I am? If you have any doubt I want you to again hear what Peter said, The Christ of God. The whole bible was written from Genesis to Revelation to point to, direct to and describe the Savior of the world and his mission. As we celebrate Christmas this year, let us not lose sight of this. Let us affirm the truth amid a world scrambling to understand just Who is Jesus. Let us proclaim and acknowledge him as we open our presents by the tree, as we meet and greet family and friends and eat a celebratory meal. Merry Christmas in the name of Lord Jesus we celebrate!

As is my custom every year, I review blog statistics and attempt to say Merry Christmas to all my readers in their native language. I can’t get accent marks working when on blogger but, here goes anyway:

Merry Christmas, Feliz Natal, з Різдвом, Veseloho Vam Rizdva, Boas Festas, Joyeux Noel, с РождествомHristos, Razdajetsja, Zalig Kerstfeest, Frohliche Weihnachten, Buon Natalie, عيدميلادمجيدmerry Milad Mubarak, Natal Mubarak, Sretan Bozic, メリークリスマス,merry merry Merii Kirisumasu, Happy Christmas, Selamat Hari Natal, Feliz Navidad, Sheng Tan Kuai Loh, Nathar Puthu Varuda Valthukkal, wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia, Wesolych Swiat, and کریسمس مبارک

Russian Friend

The last time that I blogged about the Russian-Ukrainian War was near Easter of this past year. I was moved by the contemplation of Christ’s death and Resurrection to hope for an Easter miracle, the cessation of this war.  Sadly, that was not to be. However, I did not think the war could possibly last this long. Yet it has. The stories of rape, torture, death and destruction are unfathomable and each day brings more and more cruelty beyond the pale.

The inability of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and NATO to deal with this situation effectively is all you need to know as regards the power and efficacy of such groups. What about the billions that have poured into Ukraine from all over the world, and the economic sanctions against Russia? China, India, Turkey, Iran, and North Korea are doing so much damage supporting Russia as they seek more and more influence on the world stage. The faith that we place in our own earthly wisdom and institutions are misplaced. God is the only one who will eventually end all wars for good.

Amid all of this, I feel like I have been living a double life with my Russian Friend Jenica* . Even though it has been almost a full year since the Russians invaded the Ukraine, Jenica and I have yet to have a real and serious discussion on the war. When I look out my window here in the United States, I am able to see people with Ukrainian flags on their lawns in support of that country.  I have been giving donations to Christian ministries active in Ukraine and yet I have yet to discuss any of that with Jenica.

Am I one to shrink away from stating my point of view or painful truths?  Have I had a fear of losing our friendship, yes at times. But, first and foremost I am fearful of reprisals against Jenica which could result in her getting into trouble in her country of Russia should any of our communications be intercepted. Even though that is a good reason that we should be careful when and how we communicate our feelings about this war, it feels like it is the big elephant in the middle of the room every time we talk.

Our friendship as a result, seems less than authentic. War divides. It always has and it always will. People support that side which they passionately agree with and that causes divisions between those who disagree. Yet, Jenica and I have the bond that exists between people who place their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Jenica and I met on a Missions Trip. We were paired up working as a team. We did arts and crafts for children and assisted in teaching youth inspired gospel messages. That was several years ago where such things would be possible between an American and a Russian. Today, she is a university student in Moscow. The first day that the Russians invaded Ukraine, she sent me a text message evincing great shock as to what had just occurred.

At that time, she and I were understandably in shock. However, Russians both young and old are not accustomed to betraying either their emotions or their political positions easily. Besides, it is always in the back of my mind that she is in a vulnerable position since any even perceived disapproval of the war in Russia could lead to incarceration. I try to keep that in mind every time that I feel that I want to bring up this topic.

During this awkward first discussion, I let Jenica know that our bond in friendship is our faith in Jesus Christ and I reminded her that neither she nor I are politicians or generals.  What influence could we have on such important decisions that those above us make? I spoke of the power that we have in God. As the war began, my comments to her as I recall entailed staying close to God amid these events. I wanted to say so much more but I was unsure how safe that would be.

Jenica and I often share our thoughts and feelings about everyday events and situations in our lives. We share problems and discuss solutions. But, just lately, Jenica has this uncanny ability to text me when I have just watched a news report about a Ukrainian toddler getting run over by a Russian soldier or when I just read a report of a grandmother who got raped by a Russian soldier. My emotions are all whipped up and I wonder if I should discuss this with her. Other times I wonder if she even knows what is actually happening.

This seems to be the year of energy and fuel disruptions. Recently, I was reading about a Russian assault on energy grids in Ukraine. These attacks have left many civilians without power forcing people into dire circumstances during sub-zero temperature conditions. As yet another allegation of war crimes is leveled against the Putin regime, I wonder how accusations of possible war crimes can be bandied about as if they have no meaning.

Recently, when I was out Christmas shopping, Jenica’s text message came in. I told her that I was Christmas shopping and she began to remind me of the Russian traditions of the season. As usual, she mentioned what sounded like the most important part of her holiday which is gathering around her television with the rest of her family and listening to the annual New Year’s address to the nation by Vladimir Putin.

I have often wondered if Jenica knows that the traditions of Christmas that were once celebrated in Russia were stopped by the Communists when they took over the country in 1917. I wonders if she understands the reason that she is placing pre-eminence upon the New Year’s festivities instead of the celebration of the birth of Jesus is due to the fact that her countries communist regime sought to stamp our religious practices. What a clever idea, to replace Christmas with New Year’s. They could not simply stop winter celebrations could they? Also, let us place Putin on the throne instead of Jesus. It has been working too hasn’t it?

Until now that is. Jenica suprised me when she wondered if this year the enjoyment of the holiday would be marred by disagreements within families over Putin’s war in the Ukraine. She also said many families are divided in their opinions about the war. Some people disapprove of the war while their relatives might support it.

This is a time, a moment in history where you have to choose a side. As believers we know there are only two choices, with God, or against God. If we are with God, it will reflect in the view that one has concerning world events such as this war, the role of government in our lives and the list goes on. Our views in a real sense will effect our family relations, our friendships and the way we choose to conduct business. Yes, Jenica was right, this year there is division but, it is a lot bigger than Vladimir Putin. It is between God and Satan and it is time for us to begin to act like we know this. Repent, read your bible, and find a bible-centered church to attend or online.

Let’s Talk Turkey

Can we talk about some of the family drama that accompanies Thanksgiving? It really should be a wonderful time spent with family and friends but a lot of times feathers fly and I don’t mean from the turkey. Take Mia* for example, she had just completed her Wednesday, pre-Thanksgiving workout and was getting ready to go bake pie when a knock came at the door. She wasn’t expecting anyone. When she opened the door it was her daughter Blair*who Mia had not seen for fourteen years.

Mia’s daughter Blair had left home when some pesky rules like no drugs, no sex in your parents homes and oh yeah, getting passing grades just made her know that she needed a fresh start. She reasoned that other Westchester County, New York parents allowed those things. I have a minor correction for Blair, most parents in Westchester County, New York would be okay with the sex and the drugs as long as you were a high academic achiever, oh and that if you got pregnant you got an abortion so as not to ruin your bright future.

In Blair’s mind and in order to justify her actions she concluded that she got thrown out of her house. Over the years, the words, I’m sorry mom and dad never escaped her lips. Nor, did she seem to connect with how actions may have consequences such as being asked to leave if you can not follow house rules. Although she claims faith in Jesus Christ, she never related to the story of the Prodigal Son, especially that part where he understands he deserves to be treated like the servants. And I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants- Luke 15:19. NO, Blair thinks her parents should treat her like nothing ever happened. Treat her like royalty even. What of her rebellion against God?

Then, there is Claudio*. Claudio, his wife, and kids are visiting his mom in Westchester County, New York for a week to celebrate Thanksgiving with her. His mom, Maggie* has some major issues to discuss with him such as fears over her declining health. In the past, Claudio has not been supportive of his mom except in extreme emergencies such as when she broke her arm a few years back and needed help after her surgery. On Facebook when he recounted the event, he was somehow the one suffering.

Claudio is planning on taking his kids to see New York City sites, visit old friends and drive the family, including his mother, to Philadelphia for a big old-fashioned Portuguese-American Thanksgiving. Only problem is, with Claudio it is all about having a good time, posting those special moments on Facebook despite the interpersonal relationship problems that have long existed between him and his mom.

He has drawn clear boundary lines such as telling his mom that he is too busy with his career and his kids to babysit her. Anyway, “you’re still young mom, you will live to be 100!” Hey, way to go Claudio, what a great way to make himself feel better about abandoning your mom!

Another person visiting her parents for the holidays is Morgan.* Morgan’s mother is beseeching God and trying to do everything within her power to stay well this holiday season because Thanksgiving and Christmas are the last times she may see her daughter for a long time. She wants to host her daughter and not lose one precious moment with her. If she should have to quarantine, due to that pesky virus or come down with the flu that has been going around she might even miss her daughter altogether.

It’s only one holiday season, why is she so worried about it? That is because Morgan has informed her parents of her decision to enter a cloistered monastery after the holidays. During this year long Postulancy, she will live in a closed off world in earnest among nuns who have taken a vow of silence, poverty and chastity. Morgan’s telephone time will be restricted to two times a month and visits no more than two times per year.

What do all these stories have in common? A few things. The parents of all of the above adult children are all saved, spirit-filled Christians.  Morgan, Blair, and Claudio once went to the same Church a long time ago. Claudio began attending that Church after he attended a bible study that a group of students ran. The transition to living on campus for Claudio was not easy. Naturally shy, he failed to make friends his first year at school. He repented for sins committed, professed Jesus Christ as his Savior and went on to attend a Bible-centered Church for many years.

Although Blair sailed through elementary school with no social or academic problems, high school was another story. She was struggling in her identity. She straddled the worlds of both Christianity and Westchester County New York progressive liberal society. As you may have guessed it was one or the other. Which would Blair choose? For a while there it looked like she was close to making a decision for the Lord, and then it happened!

The youth ministry kicked her when she was down. By down I mean down. Her parents were separated, her sister had psychiatric problems and she was struggling academically and socially in high school. She had migraines too.

The church youth ministry announced an upcoming opportunity to be in a stage show. It would require Blair to memorize a monologue and attend weekly practice sessions with the youth group. It was probably the worse time for Blair to do this event considering the huge amount of school work that she already had to do, including SAT preparation classes. She really wanted to be part of this event and spent a lot of time writing and practicing a Christian monologue for the upcoming show.

Every week she attended the youth group practices all the way up to the night of the performance. At the last minute the youth minister said she could not participate because she was not yet baptized. Blair was devastated. It was never the same between her and Jesus. As her mother drove her home that day, she told her that what had happened was not Jesus but part of the sin nature of humanity. But, can you blame Blair, she expected the church to represent Jesus?

As far as what represents Jesus, Morgan began to feel that instead of the risen Lord and the salvation status that this entailed, that she wanted to instead focus on the passion and death of Jesus. Maybe, even relive it daily. Where did she ever get such an icky idea? The cloistered nunnery of course. When I checked out their webpage and facebook page it shocked me. The morbid fascination with Jesus’ death instead of his glorious overcoming of death and sin seemed wrong to me. The website also seemed to contain a lot of drippy, teenage crush type talk about Jesus.

How did Morgan get to this point? Her Father is an amazingly gifted teacher of the Bible. I know he taught her better than to believe that she can be a co-redemptive along with Jesus. The convents website made it quite clear that nuns could come alongside Mary and Jesus and gave undue importance to the nuns role in the redemptive process placing itself in direct opposition to what the Bible says.

Did she desire to have what her father had? Did she covet his position in the church? Did she have the mistaken notion that somehow her father was Jesus Junior? I tend to think that was part of it. I also believe that she might be agoraphobic. Fear of being out in public and social anxiety appear to be another part of her attraction to a lifestyle that would mean that she would spend major parts of her day in total silence and have big restrictions on relationships outside of her cloistered convent.

All three of the above Thanksgiving Day guests profess Christianity. All three of them went from a Jesus alone, Bible alone, salvation by faith church to churches that are more social justice seeking rather than biblical justice seeking. The Bible verse that comes to mind immediately when I think about where they are now has to be 2 Timothy 3:5 which states: Having a form of godliness, but denying the power therof: from such turn away! Blair, Claudio and Morgan all talked turkey and Jesus during this past holiday gathering but something was missing. They talked about all the volunteer work, and prayer that they do to make the world a better place.

All three of them seem to be living with continuing ungodly behavior. The type of continuing in sin that marks a person as not a follower of Jesus. We need to honor our parents for example. The love Claudio, Blair and Morgan profess to have for their parents is undermined by the insensitive things that they constantly say and do. Maggie deals with loneliness and health problems, Claudio never seems to understand that his mother needs help but he always has times for others. Parents are part of God’s hierarchical structure for our lives and when you see a large-scale insensitivity to that, it means rebellion against God’s order. That is serious. It portents end time settings that are described in the Bible. Blair is a social justice warrior who couldn’t get past the entrée before bringing up racism, sustainability and her hatred of the status quo all while singing hymns to God and saying that some people have said she is a saint. People who don’t agree with her are toxic or have bad energy.

All three of these adult children are ferociously focused on bringing justice, coming alongside Jesus’ in praying and working for lost souls. None of them seem to be enamored with the Old Testament though. That is another clue into what’s going on with them. Let’s Talk Turkey. The New Testament is the completion of the Old Testament and together they make up everything that God wants us to know. The Old Testament is the foundation for the New Testament. It is like having a house without a foundation. It was the only scripture that Jesus read and it was good enough for him and he honored it as he went on to bring out the fuller meaning of it. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them-Matthew 5:17.

Claudio outright thought it best if his mother did not bring up the topic of the Old Testament in front of his  children. Wow. What about the covenants between God and man established there or promises made in the Old Testament that are only fulfilled in the New Testament. I liked reading the end of the book in high school when I didn’t have time to read all my assignments but, let’s face it, Shakespeare halfway is no way. Blair has made God into anything she wants him to be and he is hardly recognizable when she mixes him in with the laws of attraction and other such nonsense. Morgan’s parents Thanksgiving holiday consisted of crying their eyes out and trying to help her sell her condominium and sell all her possessions before entering the convent. She even has to get rid of her 401(K). I can’t believe the Catholic Church would ask her to do that.

Let’s Talk Turkey: Is there any hope for this next generation? For the first time in my life, I am not sure. After all the Bible says people will fall away, so why am I surprised that Blair, Claudio and Morgan have fallen away from where they once were with Jesus? Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death-Mark13:12.

Are those times here? We live in a cancel culture where you can be denounced when you do not go along with the popular theories of the time. Though things seem bad lately, I pray for individuals such as Blair, Claudio and Morgan to change the direction of their lives. I pray that they repent, place their faith in the Jesus of the Bible and be heirs to his eternal legacy.
