My Pastor has been preaching a three-part sermon series about spiritual warfare. I believe he was inspired in this. Our Church has been engaged in a variety of godly endeavors to much success. As my previous posts detail, I have been on my first Mission Trip. Ever since that trip, I have been engaged in various support functions fueling the needs of that Ministry. Missions trips just don't happen, there are details which must be attended to in order for the good work of helping those in need to continue.
It begins with prayer. As I get closer to hard deadlines and pressures have mounted to successfully complete the goals set forth, I have found it necessary to pray in a new way. Just as I did when contemplating my Mission Trip last October, I realized how much I need God to be my focal point. Apart from Him, I can do nothing. I beseech God in every aspect of this work.
As I have been praying, the burdens of leadership have fallen upon me. I understand now why churches always pray for each Ministry. It is because responsibility entails stress, hard decisions and even temptations. Staying true to God entails spiritual maturity and discernment, especially against the plots of Satan.
There are many with spiritual discernment at my church. There were a number of women who have come to me privately to warn me to be aware of the spiritual warfare to come. The Bible affirms another realm besides that which we can sense through our five senses. If we could see our own spiritual realm more clearly, we would see some of the underlying issues blocking our progress in certain situations.
Through prayer and an understanding of the heavenly realm, we can get through some of the stressful things in our life. Studying the Bible is key to getting the full picture of what spiritual warfare is and what it is not. The British scholar, author and lay theologian C.S. Lewis said that believers usually fall into one of two camps when dealing with the demonic. We either deny its' existence or we get fascinated with it.
He had a point! Today many people, including some Christians do not believe that angels or demons are real. On the other hand, there are those who can not get their fill of films depicting the devil, demons, and the battle between good and evil. Our list of obsessive fascination with the satanic sphere would not be complete without mentioning wizards, vampires, ghosts and paranormal activity. Many successful films and film franchises on the above topics have made a lot of money and furthered Satan's inroads into our lives.
It took me a long time to finally get these teachings right. I had to sort through what the popular culture, and my family had impressed upon me and take time to study the Bible. What I found was that the Bible was the only thing that made sense. The Bible perfectly explains all the things I have seen in a lifetime and consistently helped me understand and cope with my life. My relationship with God has always improved my life but I had to give up some of my bad habits first.
I have been coping with a sick husband, friendship shake-ups, and the details entailed in getting 150 handmade scarves to children living abroad in three group homes. Maybe you have been coping with some things too? When an animal is weak or imfirmed it can be preyed upon by some enemy lying in wait. The devil also lies in wait for times of weakness in our life. He strategically attacks us when he wants to take us out of the game because we are so effective for the Lord. What a chess player he is!
The Bible tells us trials will beset us but to cheer up because Jesus has overcome the world. We have to keep that in mind. The devil is subordinate to the Lord so don't fear Him! However, he can play some nasty tricks but, only if we allow him to. The Bible tells us to resist the devil and he will flee. In order to resist him we must know how he operates. He knows the whole truth about us and he will use that to tempt us to sin and stop following God.
It is sometimes difficult to determine how much of our travails are the devil, just life and how much is us giving into sin. This is spiritual warfare. God is faithful to us if we turn to Him during times of trouble. Have I and my church encountered spiritual warfare? Yes, but the good news is that Satan is attacking us because we are doing a lot of things right. A friend of mine who does not believe in the devil asked me if the devil is real why hasn't she ever encountered him? I told her that it was because he is pleased with the way she is running her life. What a wake-up call for my friend and what a wake-up call for us. Let's make every day count for the Lord, and let's ask Him to strengthen us to be our very best! The devil is real but he is a defeated foe. Let us rejoice because of the victory we have over him because of Jesus! Thank you Lord.
Take a moment to think about your life, and reflect upon issues that are relevant to being the best person that you can be. Finally, let us confirm what we believe and endeavor to make a difference for God.

Mother's Day or Father's Day*
If you pay attention to such things, my online profile might indicate to you my love of nineteenth century literature. I love the romance, the innocent humor, the simple joys expressed and the sense of family depicted. The sense of family shows a rosy picture of parents and children in harmony, with the youngsters expected to have a respectful attitude towards their parents. Anything less was considered bad character.
Literature and history also recorded the intrigues, joys and dissatisfactions inherent in the parent-child relationship. However, family was held in high regard as a foundational unit of society. These standards emanated from the Judeo-Christian biblical values practiced in those times. Those ethics related back to the biblical commandment stated in Deuteronomy 5: 12 which commanded us to honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which thy God giveth thee.
Honor is an interesting word to use, because God Almighty doesn't make mistakes. He did not say to love everything your parents do. God also did not say honor thy children. So it does not seem to point to a completely reciprocal relationship between parent and child. Interesting isn't it? What I see all around me in Westchester County, New York is a huge lose of wisdom as regards the parent-child relationship. In fact, those relationships are completely screwed up.
The societal implications of turning our back on God can be seen by its' huge effect on the family setting. Parent-child relationship roles have been turned completely upside down. Enfant terribles lead foolish needy parents around and manipulate them as they run amok in the greater Westchester society. There are tantrums galore and parents don't know how or don't want to do anything about it.
It seems that everyone thinks their child is God's gift to the world and everything they do is precious. Of course children are indeed a gift and a blessing from God but after that, religious and secular people diverge in their philosophy. You see, when God is not on his throne, what do we place foremost in His place? Sometimes, the adoration gets transferred to our children.
One sign that this has occurred might be excessive bragging about the child and their achievements. We all, at times, are proud of what our children do, but this goes way beyond that. Parents in this community have the means to financially indulge every aspect of their child's upbringing. So, the bragging starts with soccer, dance class and other extra curricula activities because parents don't just put their children in soccer or dance class, they have them see a special sports trainer/dance coach.
Analysis and enhancement of a child's skills begin early too. I would say in the womb. Training begins in the womb. Even though Westchester parents deny the viability of a growing fetus as being an unborn baby for the purpose of killing them if they are deemed unwanted, they go to the other point of view when they want that baby. They begin teaching them languages, and giving them music lessons in utero. When they issue forth from the womb, plans have already been made concerning their perfect life path and even including the Ivy League school that they will attend.
An Au Pair or nanny has already been hired that will speak in another language and teach them appropriate cultural lessons from their native land. Thereby ensuring Junior speaks a perfect unaccented second language and can write an historical dissertation in no time. Infant swim lessons have been procured, as well as infant exercise or yoga class. As childhood progresses summer camp is that all too vital step towards insuring growing skills. So, for instance, computer languages and programming skill camps have to be signed up for mid-winter lest your child miss their opportunity to be the next tech guru with that ensuing paycheck.
Physical superiority must be maximized by youthful nose jobs, breast augmentation and skin analysis. In my quest for a simple hobby or some creative outlet, I decided to take a crocheting class. I thought it might be fun. That was my first mistake. No one but me was interested in just having a little fun in that class. They were just interested in being the best at it. I should have known better after living here so long! One lady was married to a Michelin star chef. He didn't get there by having a little fun. One woman was a Chief Financial Officer who had graduated from Harvard.
There was even a google executive and former MIT graduate who had signed up for the class. Bragging about oneself and ones children was simply de rigeur in this class. What became clear pretty quickly is that while a number of these parents were quite impresssive, a number of their children were not. That did not stop the bragging however, no matter how blatenly false it was. These movers and shakers could not afford for these children to fail because it would reflect badly upon them. The recent multi-million dollar scandals concerning parents buying their children into Ivy League institutions came as no surprise to me. It is the end result of this worshipful and wrong-headed thinking.
This bribery scandal is a sample of the end result of worshipping our children and ourselves for that matter. These parents would stop at nothing to get their children into top rated U.S. schools including bribing athletic coaches to get their unqualified teens on various teams. They even had test proctors manipulating college entrance exams. The state of parenting has gone far afield of God's plan for the family and we need to get back to it.
That begins with exploring some concepts found in the Bible. Stories that we can put together to paint a picture of the structure and ordering of the family as God sees it. Beginning with the book of Genesis, that book which describes our origins, we are made privy to the intricate organization of the universe. Is it any wonder as we study this, that God's plan for the family would entail an intimate sort of organization?
As I said before, the Bible does not appear to put the parent and child on equal footing. God's system is at odds with the current philosophy that is tearing the parent-child relationship apart. Go to therapy and you will get every excuse to hate your parents even more than you did before you entered that office. Schools are often supplanting parents even to the point of impinging on the rights of said parents and undermining their authority.
This goes against everything the Bible says about child-rearing. In a very short time in the human story, the long-held pattern of parent-child relationships have been overturned. This is huge. We are now living in a time where divorce and parent-child estrangement is the norm. I pray that as we get ready to celebrate Mother's Day or Father's Day that we concern ourselves with something more than the superficial trappings of the holiday. Take time to reflect on the nature of your relationship with your parents. Is it time to stop holding a grudge against your parents and forgive thems? What about spending more time with them and helping them around the house alittle? Don't waste anymore time to truly honor your parents in a special way.
* a few details were changed to protect identities but not much.

Churches Burning
The war on Christianity is real and is being waged on many fronts. One of those fronts is the destruction of Christian places of worship. This has been going on for many years. The enemies of Christians will also frequently utilize the most important Christian holidays to ensure killing the largest number of Christians. A successful holiday explosion might also have the added benefit of scaring away people from ever attending service or participating in holiday festivities. This is sick!
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?- Romans 8:35
All of this recently played out in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. This, on the most jubilant day wherein we reflect upon and remember the day that Jesus rose from the dead! Yet, on this day of celebration, the lives of three hundred and fifty nine men, women, and children were snuffed out in coordinated and carefully planned attacks. Five hundred more people were injured. Many Sri Lankan church services have been canceled until further notice. There are still many credible threats against Christians in that country.
And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held.- Revelation 6:9
When I woke up on that lovely Easter morning, I was filled with all the hope and promise that this special day brings. I thought of the surprise that some of Jesus' followers most have felt when they visited the tomb of Jesus only to find that He was not there. I thought of the grace (that me) a sinner had been afforded because of our Lord's sacrifice. Now, it was Easter and there was the joy of victory that Jesus had over death. I love the parties and get-together that occur on Easter and I enjoy the chocolate Easter eggs.
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.- Luke 24:2-3
Shortly after making my first cup of coffee I turned on my device and pulled up a news site. The headlines were like a morning dose of caffeine. Suddenly, I was wide awake. I couldn't believe it. Three churches and two hotels in Sri Lankan had been hit by a Muslim terrorist attack. Later on there would also be explosives found at an airport and even a bomb making factory was discovered. How is this not war? This is the war on Christianity.
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.- 1 John 3:13
There has been an uptick of stories describing the deaths of Christians around the world due to religious persecution. Not to mention the bombing or desecration of our places of worship. It is frequently not a lead story on the evening news nor in the suggested news stories pushed by your Facebook page, iPhone or other device. Why is that?
But he denied it, saying," I neither know nor understand what you are talking about."-Mark 14:68
One such story is that Christians in the Sudan and Nigeria face much uncertainty as they go about their daily lives. There are continual assaults on their rights, lands and livelihoods. Their churches and bible meeting groups are constantly attacked. Nigeria alone had three hundred Christians killed during the months of March and April and their churches burned to the ground. On Palm Sunday, a Baptist baby dedication party turned from a celebration to a funeral when seventeen of the attendees were ruthlessly gunned down by the neighboring Fulani Muslim tribesmen. Several children and the mother of that baby were killed.
They cried out with a loud voice, " O Soverign Lord Holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?- Revelation 6:10
Turning to France, we have all recently heard of the terrible fire that raged in Paris' Nôtre Dame Cathedral. But, did you know that there had been many vandalistic acts against churches in the year before this Cathedral fire? According to the German news site PI-News, two churches are desecrated every day in France. They also reported that there were one thousand and sixty-three attacks on French churches in 2018. This is up by seventeen percent from the previous year. With that pattern I have my doubts about what really happened at Nôtre Dame Cathedral.
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.- 2 Timothy 3:12
As I recall headlines that I have seen as regards the Middle East and Asia it seems quite dire for Christians there, if not genocidal. The Bible describes the martyrdom that believers have and always will face. It is not possible to face these terrible evil persecutions without the strong presence of the Holy Spirit. It is time for Christians to do more to assist fellow believers. Christian refugees are in need of practical help.
Strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.- Acts 14:22
Sometimes they need relocation or workers to rebuild their churches. Certainly political action is long past due. We can work through our government or church organizations to make a difference in God's worldwide church. As we proceed with our day let's contemplate anew how we can be a better worldwide body of Christ. We need to start acting more like family.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
- Matthew 5:9-11

Jesus' Entry
The events of Holy Week dramatically commences with Jesus' Entry into the city of Jerusalem. The setting was the seven days of Passover when the Jews, then and now, commemorate God's miraculous rescue of their small Semitic tribe from slavery in the land of Egypt. God had promised Abraham that he would be the father of a great nation. Furthermore, that through that nation all the nations of the entire world would be blessed.
Nothing about this story seems probable. We have a man Abraham and his wife Sarah who were childless during their youth. They long waited for an heir to be produced and then further complicating things Sarah went through menopause. We have a Hebrew nation dominated and enslaved many times throughout their history. Is this really the nation that will bring blessings to the whole earth? Yet, this is indeed how God works. In the overcoming of these seemingly impossible odds God's greatness is shown.
Themes connecting to Exodus and improbability continue as Jesus makes His entry into Jerusalem. Many people were beginning to feel that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah who would come to save Israel from yet another overseer, this time the Roman empire. These folks expected God's mighty hand to invoke a miracle as when He parted the Red Sea and destroyed the soldiers trying to pursue the escaping Hebrews.
Yet, here Jesus comes riding in on a humble little donkey. There was no powerful steed, nor chariot of fire, not even an angel army! Many were disappointed by this. So, when it came time later to support one Jewish criminal for the annual Passover pardon from the Roman Governor, the people thought the revolutionary Barabbas would be the best choice to bring salvation from the Romans. They thought when the Messiah or the Anointed One would arrive that it would be with pomp and military options.
They were right and they were wrong. Jesus did come to bring salvation, but as He said, His kingdom would not be of this world. Some people failed to recognize the spiritual salvation that Jesus brought. As Jesus and the Jewish people readied themselves to celebrate the Passover feast a new Passover was coming. And, just as the blood of the lamb smeared over the door saved a family from the Angel of Death, the blood of Jesus spilt on Calvary can save us from the eternal consequences of our actions.
When mankind has an opportunity to pick a leader the strongest option is often chosen. When the Jews could have God as their leader, they instead choose the tall, strong and handsome man Saul. How often do we still choose the wrong leader because we fail to know what is really important? We still pick leaders based on superficial things such as looks, or smooth talking presentations.
So it was, as Jesus' Entry into Jerusalem failed to produce the instant gratification longed for by many that the tumult began. From waving palm branches and welcoming Him with chants of Hosanna (Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord), we end with an arrest warrant being issued and a death sentence being imposed. As we contemplate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem who do we say that Jesus is? Is He just some historic figure? Have we went from saying Hosanna to rejecting him because we have not seen the miraculous signs and wonders that we were dreaming of? Can we see a deeper meaning to this Holy Week story?
Played against the backdrop of humanity in all its' confusion and sin, Palm Sunday begins to shed light on the deeper meaning of God's plan. The salvific wheels first set in motion in the Garden of Eden are now rapidly resulting in a solution to the problem of sin. As the events of Holy Week unfold God takes humanity to a whole new level of healing through the atoning death and resurrection of Jesus on the cross.
This came as a shock to everyone witnessing these events on that first Palm Sunday so long ago. Many could not accept the changes that were occurring so quickly in God's plan. It still shocks people today. We are still scrambling and debating about who Jesus really is and what He did. Sometimes you miss the forest for the trees. Let's not miss who Jesus really is. He is a servant to all. He is a healer. He is a mighty God. He is the Savior of you and me!
Nothing about this story seems probable. We have a man Abraham and his wife Sarah who were childless during their youth. They long waited for an heir to be produced and then further complicating things Sarah went through menopause. We have a Hebrew nation dominated and enslaved many times throughout their history.

Dating Primer
Dating. Does that even have any meaning today? For some people it does, for some it does not. There are some who feel that it is an outdated concept. In Westchester County, N.Y. one of my daughters asked me what dating was like when I was in High School. I described a first date usually consisting of going out for a hamburger, pizza, and then a movie. The boy always came to my door and met my family and he always escorted me home. For the most part, being with a boy was done in a group. As the relationship progressed, sports such as tennis, biking, hiking or a beach visit might happen. As time went by, concerts, museums and Manhattan dates would come about. The ankle bracelet, or high school ring would signal that a couple was going steady. I would wear such trinkets with pride and write my name and his on all my textbook covers and draw a big heart around them. At this point, I was already thinking if a marriage would work. Or even how his last name would jive with my first name. If that did not work, I would try my last name with a hyphen and include his name at the end.
My daughter sadly lamented the current state of dating for many of her friends. There were hook-up sessions. The boy was not going to spend any money and usually he had to make sure a girl kissed well before he committed to asking her out on a date. It was all about finding someone to make him happy and if they did not, well good riddance to her! How different that was from what I had taught her and the concept of covenant marriage that our church preached.
The standards for dating if you are a Christian depart radically from those espoused in the popular culture. Music, and the entertainment industry often depict beauty, sexuality and relationships in ways that distort God's plan for how men and women should treat each other. There is a superficiality based upon looks and money that does not correspond with godly thinking.
Selfishness pervades and creates dissension in many a budding romance, often leading to frustration and anger. Selfishness seems to emerge as a key component in ungodly dating. Compare this to the biblical standard (John 15:12- "My command is this: love each other as I have loved you.") The manner in which Jesus loved us is immense. Contemplating this is the key to developing and maintaining a healthy relationship. Jesus loves us and has demonstrated that even going so far as to sacrifice His life so that we could live. Does your boyfriend even care if you get safely home?
Jesus was a servant to others who humbly washed the feet of the apostles before the last supper. Does the person you are dating serve their family or their community? Is there a generosity of spirit, a magnanimity towards you that touches your heart? The Bible teaches us that we should look deeper and not judge a person by just what appears on the surface. (1 Samuel 16:7- But the Lord said unto Samuel, look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.") Are you choosing your partner because he is "tall, dark, and handsome?" Sometimes we get a sharp lesson when we fail to heed God's wisdom. We may wonder why we just can't meet a nice guy. It could be because we are not looking for one. This is food for thought on a very important topic, dating.
God's plan for dating includes mutual respect, service, patience and waiting. In the long-run, all these attributes will help build a godly, happy family setting. Another basic for Christian dating includes making God an intricate part of your relationship. That can only happen if the other person is a Christian. I struggled with this throughout the years and you might too. I met someone who seemed nice at school. I thought that over time they might convert for me. Sometimes, I looked but didn't find an eligible bachelor at church. It is at times like this you must purposely pray and trust God to meet your needs.

Sabbath Day
Many people are not attending church these days, and some of these folks are Christians. Of course, it is understandable in cases of illness or even in the case of a Sunday employment responsibility. We also know there are many places around the world where one is not free to attend a church service on the Sabbath Day.
Let's look at the phenomena from the vantage point of my life in Westchester County, New York. Here is a partial list of reasons why people have told me that they aren't going to church on Sunday. "My son has a soccer game." "I had a busy week. I am so tired." "Our family has to catch up on chores, my house is a mess and the kids have too much homework." "Home repairs." "Sunday is the only day that I can sleep in. Anyway, I can watch a service online." I have certainly made some of these excuses myself over the years.
Let's look a little more closely at the underlying issues regarding church attendance. As we look at some of the reasons people stay away from church we see that people are exhausted and overwhelmed by their lives. They feel unable to accomplish basic weekly chores. These are issues that must be addressed and can be eliminated in order to be free and available to attend a weekly worship service.
Then, there are the other issues which arise and explain why Christians stay away from churches. Foremost among them is lack of viable churches in their vicinity. Many churches no longer preach sound Christian doctrine and have instead become something other than what Christ intended. Other churches seem cold and unable to welcome newcomers. What of ungodly and hurtful things that happen to some in various congregations? The music played at service has also arisen to be a factor in people's minds when choosing a worship service.
Regardless of the issues you might have regarding the need to attend church services, there is a clear mandate to do so biblically speaking. God himself constructed and gave us a template for doing so in the early books of the Bible and the theme of corporate worship continues to be developed and referred to throughout the entirety of the Bible.
The Old Testament books of Exodus and Leviticus mention worship. Vitally important is the commandment mentioned in Exodus 20:8-11 commanding Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Here is another such passage: when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent -Exodus 33:10.
Moving on in the Bible, we see an account of worship during the time of King David, 2 Samuel 6:5 says David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord with all kinds of instruments made of fir wood, and with lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets and cymbals.
As I have studied the various scriptures concerning worship it is pretty clear that people then as well as now have struggled to keep holy the sabbath day. When Exodus 20:10 states that neither our sons or daughters are suppose to work on the Sabbath Day. This means that we parents have to take a stand as regards what activities they are allowed to engage in on Sunday.
For those of you in Westchester, who don't know what that means, let me further explain. We must say no to our children sometimes. As I can attest, that could mean various tantrums, hate-filled tirades and allegations of ruining their lives on the part of a child. Resolving to follow this directive
from God Himself could have far reaching implications for you and your family.
After God did the creative work of bringing the whole world into existence He rested and He exhorts us to do the same. What could be more compelling? Another compelling fact to reflect upon is that Jesus is pictured in the synagogue studying scripture and worshipping God on the sabbath. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read -Luke 4:16.
In Luke 4:16 Jesus shows us part of the purpose of the sabbath to be that of reading and studying scripture. Time spent on Sunday doing this will help us grow toward spiritual maturity and in living the Christian life. A godly church offers an opportunity to share time with spiritually mature elders and hear a mature Christian, the Pastor, teach, help you understand the Bible and assist you in fostering your relationship with God. In 2 Timothy 4:2 Paul rather compellingly tells Timothy: Preach the word, be urgent in season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. God equips certain ones among us to fulfill this role of preaching and you can meet that person at the pulpit on Sunday.
Jesus desired that we should all be one in Him. In other words we should be united in some ways. The Bible describes Christ and the church as a body with Him as the head and we as the parts. This suggests working together tightly and efficiently. The picture of Jesus as the groom and the church as the bride is another example of this closeness. Yet, the concept of coming together with one another and with Christ is never taken for granted in the Bible because somehow in our sinful ways this commandment is put aside.
Our busy lives and selfish ways get in the way of doing was is really important, that is giving God glory and praise on the day that He set aside as holy. In addition, to the worship of God, we remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross and have communion in memory of that. So, I urge you as Paul so perfectly did in Hebrews: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching- Hebrews 10:25.

The Diagnosis
The diagnosis happens to each and every one of us. It happens to our friends and to our families. It sometimes happens to the very young and routinely to the very old. Are we every ready for it? I mean really ready for it?
I have often been asked what a Christians' thoughts are at a time like that. A friend on Long Island told me that perhaps some of the shortcomings of being an atheist emerged after he got the diagnosis.
What is the diagnosis? You know what the diagnosis is. The thing that happens that changes your life forever. Take Lindsey* for example. I met her when our kids were nine and ten years old. She was a kindergarten teacher in the Bronx, New York. She was a single mother to her daughter Tiffany* when the diagnosis came. It was Lupus, an auto-immune disorder, which turned her whole world upside-down.
Sometimes, the diagnosis hits in your own family. Such is the case for me, when my husband got the diagnosis recently. I had all sorts of feelings when his routine health exam revealed a possible problem. Then, the process begins. You are in the health system with all sorts of invasive tests, insensitive staff and incomprehensible procedures. Friends and family who mean well but just say the most hurtful things.
As a Christian what is or should be my response? How might my handling of the diagnosis compare or contrast to those who do not believe in God? Is there any difference at all? Over the years it would appear as if one of the most fruitful times that I have impacted people for Christ has been when I have been feeling my worst.
When I have to cope with various problems, betrayals or the lose of a loved one, there always seems to be those around me who suddenly have loads of questions about God and how knowing Him matters in my life.
This time has been no different. As I cope with my husband's health woes, I have had to challenge myself to meaningfully answer important theological questions. This, at a time, where I must confess that I would rather just nest at home with my husband and shut the world out as much as possible! My brain is not even operating at its' full capacity. But, should I give in to all my feelings? The answer is no.
My life and yours is a Ministry to those around us. In a hurting world in desperate need of positive role-models nothing is better than showcasing our godly-living in even the most dire circumstances. I am not talking about phony religious postering or being less than genuine.
When the diagnosis comes, it is one big wake-up call as to where you truly are in relationship with the Lord. Not where you wish you were, not where you tell others that you are. It is important to pay attention to that. If there are any questions that one has during such a critical time, it is important to immediately seek spiritual guidance at church or with a mature Christian. Not doing so can result in falling into the temptation of despair and godlessness. This is just what our adversary, the devil, wants. So, confirming what it is that I believe is the first step in coping with the diagnosis.
Keeping my spiritual routines are really important too. I read the Bible every day and spend time in prayer but now it is even more critical because the first day that I missed doing it, I felt like Moses when he failed to keep his arms lifted in battle. I began to lose things that God wanted me to have, his sweet blessed assurance for instance. Instead, I felt fear and depression attack me, as well as my peace and spiritual strength decrease.
So, this has reminded me to put on the full armour of God everyday and then to let God do the rest. I have just gathered togethered some inspiring bible verses which I thought might be a blessing to my husband and me for the next batch of doctors appointments. I have resolved to forgive those who have been cruel to us or who just failed to treat us with the dignity which God imbued us with. I am accepting the love and help of godly friends and family. My husband is grateful that the Pastor and elders will soon be praying and anointing him with oil, just as described in the Bible. What a blessing.

Uncovering The Truth about Carnival
As spring approaches and the Christian commemoration of Jesus' resurrection from the dead draws near, let's have a raunchy blow-out party before we sincerely reflect upon this day. One last time to sin before I start praying and fasting. Does that make any sense to you? The wild parties just get bigger and bigger every year. Whole cities shutdown in order to host revelers who drink excessively, bare their breasts and asses all to the cheers of throngs of people attending these events.
(For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life- is not of the Father but is of the world.- 1 John 2:16)
In New Orleans, Louisiana you even get rewarded for this with a cheap and gaudy purple, yellow and green necklace. The color purple represents Jesus' suffering in Catholic tradition. During Mardi Gras purple becomes a symbol of nude excess. Does this honor Jesus atoning death and resurrection? What about the recent criticism the President of Brazil received for sharing an image of two people engaged in gross and humiliating sexual practices right on the streets of Brazil during Carnival? Was the President wrong for sharing such images? Or, was he a leader who Uncovered The Truth About Carnival? (Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.- Deuteronomy 12:32)
The present day displays described as pre-Lenten or Easter season activities are anything but. They are in fact in opposition to everything that is considered godly and good in the Bible. I would venture to say that nearly everything that happens during Carnival or Mardi Gras violates the commandments of God. What goes on there is an abomination to God.
(He said unto me, "Turn thee yet again, and you shalt see greater abominations that they do." - Ezekiel 8:13)
The floats and parades feature images of false gods, demons, and scantily clad women. People are getting drunk, having all sorts of sex and doing drugs while the media presents this as a pre-Lenten event. We have to begin to change this narrative. Mardi Gras and Carnival are the anthithesis of our Lord's Resurrection Day and Christians should have nothing to do with it.
(Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provisions for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. - Romans 13:13-14)
I'm not saying not to eat a king cake or pancake on Shrove Tuesday. Just understand that this is a cultural tradition and separate it from the solemnity of Easter. However, when faced with the debauchery of Carnival do not succumb to the temptation encompassed therein. The best way to do that is by taking a closer look at he Biblical mandate regarding some of these practices. Then resolve to keep the Lord's commandments.
(And now Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good? - Deuteronomy 10:12-13)

Baby Mama Mania
This week's news headlines read like Baby Mama Mania. Story after story detailed the complexities of the modern day relationship. First, there was the story of that woman famous for her families reality television show who broke off with her baby daddy amid claims that he just slept with her sister's best friend. This unfaithful basketball star had actually done a similar thing before. A previous girlfriend was pregnant with his first child when he began hooking up with the aforementioned reality television star!
Or, what about the New York headlines concerning a country music star's marriage to a local police officer. Apparently, at one point he was engaged to a professional soccer player but got another woman pregnant at the same time. Good luck with this guy honey!!
If you think this is just a celebrity problem, think again. A Christian, that I once knew, told me of the complications that the government must go through right here in Westchester County, New York, as it sorts through the fallout from these crazy hook-ups. The claims that "the child is not mine" must be investigated. There are children who must be cared for and raised despite the fact that their parents were irresponsible people who gave no thought to how this would happen.
How did we get to the point where we must face this new societal norm? What can we do to stem the tide of this insanity? The answer lies in spiritual truths that we have allowed to go largely by the wayside. Truths that honor the family and honor those commitments that we make. You need a license to drive a car and Christians ought to know that you need a license to have sex. A marriage license that is!
I was recently surprised to learn of the marriage of a Christian man after he had already got his girlfriend pregnant. I asked the father of this man if he was still attending church (thinking that he had fallen away from Jesus). The response was a photo sent via text of his almost 40 year old son in his car going to church. Smiling and happy, Michel* was well-dressed and from all outward appearances was the picture perfect Christian. How in the world does Michel feel comfortable sitting in church and then go ahead and do this?
Could this reflect upon his church? Is it a church full of people who are Christians in name only? Are they preaching sound doctrine? How do we separate what is the inevitable imperfections that will be present in all churches from the church in need of reform? The answer is in an unrepentant manner and the continuation of sin of those attending that church. Would it be hard to differentiate the moral character of the congregants of such a church from the previously mentioned television stars?
Many Christian parents fail to adequately teach their children the biblical view of sex and the family. This allows the schools and the popular dysfunctional culture to raise them instead. God commands that we must train a child in the way it should go. So, first and foremost we must be aware of this biblical mandate of teaching and must not relegate that to others. We are responsible to God for educating our children. We must also be good role-models of the very things that we are trying to teach them.
Support your Pastor and Elders when they speak about these difficult topics. Don't just read the Word of God, practice it. Consider anew if there is any sexual sin in your own life. Resolve to conquer it. As you contemplate God's design for your sexuality and the ensuing family responsibilities don't forget to ask God to help you attain it. It is impossible without Him.

Christian Wife Reviews- "The Least of These: the Graham Staines Story"
The story of the Australian missionary Graham Staines has just come to the silver screen here in Westchester County, New York. As is usual with a Christian movie, that means only three possible viewing locations. Either, New Rock City at the New Rochelle Shopping and entertainment center, Ridge Hill in Yonkers, or crossing the bridge to enter Rockland County to view it at the Palisades Center Mall. I chose to cross the just completed Mario Cuomo Bridge and pay the toll on an unseasonably warm New York winter day.
Graham Staines dedicated thirty-four years of his life to serving and ministering to lepers in India. Along with his wife he made a difference in the lives of countless people who were rejected by their families and community because of the disease of leprosy. Maddeningly, the disease was no longer incurable during the time of his Ministry, which was between 1965 and 1999.
Still, the disease was considered a curse and people were shunned because of it. In one poignant scene, the film depicts a mock funeral service being held for the family and friends of a leper, even though the man was still alive and watching the proceedings. Other touching moments show a woman being shunned at the village well even though she is cured of the disease or a man who everyone is afraid to touch.
This is not a movie that you will soon forget, it is a gritty and hard-hitting tale of the missionary life. Further, Rev. Staines story highlights some of the current debates surrounding missionary work. Such as, should churches send missionaries to work in countries hostile to the Christian faith. Also, what is an acceptable way to convert people?
The question of conversion methods is a theme in this movie. Some misguided missionaries in India were actually paying people to become Christians. It is sad to think that anyone seemingly equipped to bring the gospel to poor and desperate individuals wouldn't have more biblical insight than that. Graham Staines did not ever resort to such practices although he was accused of it.
This was at a time when a real persecution of the Christian Church had begun in India. Much of this was due to the Hindutva movement. For those of you not familiar with this term, it refers to a type of pro-Hindu movement responsible for instigating a lot of violence against those who are deemed adversaries to the Hindu faith or not of Indian origin. It was a Hindutva activist who was responsible for the death of Mohatma Gandhi.
Graham Staines gets in the crosshairs of this dangerous group which had infiltrated every element of Hindu society (academia, police, press). A journalist character is introduced into the story to help us explore the effects of this and to help move the viewer towards an exploration of the truth.
Another important theme that arises in this movie concerns radical Christian forgiveness. When the unthinkable happens will the Staines family be able to continue to follow the Lord and live out their faith? The answer is yes, and it will challenge each and every one of us to dig deeper and get off the sidelines of the Christian life. If you have a chance, go and see The Least of These: the Graham Staines Story. It premiered February 2019 in the United States and will be in Indian theaters as of March 2019. Elsewhere, a Christian store or online venue in your country may be your best option.
